What Are SIL and PL?

The SIL (IEC 62061) and PL (ISO 13849) concepts that define risk-reduction levels in machine safety.

How reliable a safety function must be is determined by risk analysis. SIL (Safety Integrity Level) and PL (Performance Level) grade this reliability.

PL a–b
≈ SIL 1 (low risk)
PL c–d
≈ SIL 2 (medium risk)
PL e
≈ SIL 3 (high risk)
Rough mapping
The required SIL/PL is determined by a risk graph; the total chain of chosen components (sensor+logic+actuator) must meet this level.
